Routine blood tests are done by our healthcare assistants. You might be asked to come for a 'fasting' blood test; this means that you must not have anything to eat or drink, except water, from midnight the night before your test.
Blood samples are usually taken from the arm, at the elbow joint, so please wear clothing that allows your sleeve to be easily rolled up.

Those patients with chronic diseases will be invited to attend important regular checks in our Health Monitoring clinics which help to ensure the best up to date and appropriate treatment is being given.
The health visitors are available on weekdays only. To contact them call 01225 485529. If there is no reply, leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible. The health visitors will carry out developmental assessments if a need is identified.
If you want help to stop smoking, speak to the receptionist who will provide you with a stop smoking information pack and book a first appointment for you. At the first appointment you will have an opportunity to discuss nicotine replacement therapy and medication, and you may be given a prescription. You will agree a quit date, and thereafter you will have a number of follow up appointments at the surgery to support and encourage you to continue to refrain from smoking.
We advise all women between the ages of 25 and 49 to have a cervical smear every 3 years and patients between the ages of 50 and 64 every 5. This can be arranged by making an appointment with the Practice Nurse in the Treatment Room. Patients are encouraged to have a routine cervical smear, however, if a patient feels that they do not want to have a smear test for any reason, the patient can either ask for the test to be deferred for 3 or 5 years or can sign a disclaimer form which will remove them from the Health Authority screening list. A patient should be aware that if this is the case they will not receive any more letters and if, at any time in the future, they decide to have a cervical smear they can make an appointment to have this done.
All the doctors provide a family planning service during normal surgery appointments. An appointment can be made with the Practice Nurse for family planning advice and pill checks. Fitting of coils should be discussed with Dr Hamling, Dr Ezobi or one of the Practice nurses prior to making an appointment.
Requests for emergency contraception will be seen straight away.
A wide range of minor surgery, such as injections, incisions, aspirations and excisions can be done by the doctors and qualified staff in the Treatment Room.
A full range of immunisations are carried out in the Practice, including childhood immunisations and travel vaccinations, tetanus and influenza immunisation and meningitis C vaccinations for young people.
The Practice nurses have childhood Immunisation clinics on alternate Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 09:00 to 11:00. These clinics are by appointment only.
The doctors support and recommend the national childhood immunisation programme.

This is a small room next to the reception area which has equipment for you to check your height, weight, body mass index and blood pressure. There is also a range of information leaflets about healthy living, diet, exercise and information about specific conditions. Please take time while you are at the surgery to make use of this facility. There are also forms for you to complete and return to reception (in confidence) in order for us to update your medical record.
The Bath talking Therapies service uses rooms at the Health Centre for counselling sessions. You may be referred to this service by a GP or you can self refer. for more information, call the service on 01225 675150 or visit the website at: http://iapt-banes.awp.nhs.net
After initial booking with the doctor the midwife attached to the practice will contact you to arrange your booking. This may be done at home or in the surgery. At the booking appointment the midwife will plan your care throughout your pregnancy, birth and aftercare.
Midwife clinics are held at the surgery on Fridays each week and they can be contacted on 01225 824669.
After your baby has been born, an appointment will be sent to you for your baby's 6-week check and your own postnatal check. The midwives will visit you at home as necessary, usually up until 10 days. Please ensure your discharge summary is handed in to the practice.

A NHS podiatry clinic is provided on Tuesdays each week.
There is a NHS physiotherapy clinic on Wednesday afternoons offering physiotherapy to patients who have been assessed and referred by a doctor.
Andrew Beacham is a private osteopathist, providing regular sessions on Mondays each week. This service is only available privately but is recognized by most major private health insurers.
Dr Bryany Duggan is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with over 17 years experience. This is a non-NHS service but can be accessed through private health insurance.
Although the majority of complementary therapies are not currently available free on the NHS, the Practice supports complementary medicine and provides clinical rooms for hire to private practitioners wishing to provide services to our patients.

PLEASE NOTE that to book an appointment to see the GP or Nurse at BSU, students are advised to enrol for online services. This will enable you to book appointments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as well as request repeat prescriptions, view test results and view your coded medical record.
All newly registered students will automatically be enrolled for online services and login details will be sent via text message or email, as long as this has been provided at registration and you have consented to receive notifications. Otherwise, your login details will be posted to you. Please ensure you provide a full Bath postal address when you register with us. If we are not able to send your login details by any of the above methods you will need to come to our main surgery at Fairfield Park Health Centre to enrol in person. You will need to bring a photographic form of ID with you.
Alternatively, appointments can be booked by telephoning the surgery on 01225 331616 to speak to a receptionist (Option 3) or use our automated telephone booking system (Option 1) to book an appointment.

Advice for New Students
For life threatening emergencies dial 999 immediately. If you need to be seen urgently, i.e. on the same day, and it is not a life threatening emergency, the following options may be available for you.
Appointments with a male or female GP or a nurse are available at the Newton Park Campus Surgery and Fairfield Park Health Centre.

Smoking, Alcohol & Drugs
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

We would like to reassure young people about their rights to medical help and privacy (confidentiality).
Even if you are under 16 years of age, doctors still have to keep anything you tell them private, just as they would for an adult. So if you seek advice on any problem ranging from a cold to something as personal as contraception or a sexual problem, your doctor will not tell anyone what has been discussed.
In exceptional circumstances the doctor may believe that keeping a secret puts either a patient or someone else at risk of harm. For example a doctor may suspect you are being seriously hurt in some way, and may wish to involve other professionals in helping you. No information would be passed without first discussing this option with you.
You don't need your parent's permission to see a doctor, and no information will be discussed with your parents without your agreement. Many parents and young people can talk about their problems together, but many do find it extremely difficult. It can be reassuring to ask a doctor for help and advice.
Equally, keeping a sexual relationship, drug problem or depression secret for example, can be stressful so confiding in your parents, an adult you trust or your doctor may make life easier.
It can be supportive to have someone with you. This may be a parent, a friend or a partner.
Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:
The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
You have the right to access the information we hold about you. We must provide the requested information within one month of receiving the request.
Online. The simplest way to access your medical record would be to register for online services. This will enable you to view your record as well as request repeat prescriptions and book appointments. To register for online services you will need to ask at reception. They may need to see some form of photographic ID to verify you. Alternatively, if we already have an up to date mobile phone number and/or email address for you, then you can phone and ask us to text or email your login details.
In person. You can request to come to the surgery and view your medical records in person. You will need to put your request in writing to the surgery. One of our admin team will then contact you to make an appointment to come and view your records. An admin team member will sit with you to show you how to view your record on our system. Although they may be able to advise you on technical aspects of the system they will not be able to answer any questions you may have about clinical matters.
Paper copies. You can request a paper copy of some or all of your medical record. Please put your request in writing and let us know exactly what you would like to have, e.g. the full record, records between certain dates, all records relating to a specific condition etc. You will be contacted once the requested information is ready so that you can come and collect it. You may need to bring a photographic form of ID with you as verification.
Paper copies by post. If you want copies of some or all of your record, but are unable to collect them from the surgery, we can send them via Royal Mail recorded delivery but you will be charged for the postage. Payment may be required in advance.
Charges. You will not be charged for having copies of records we hold about you unless the request is deemed to be unfounded or excessive. For example, if you make multiple requests for the same information or if you request a full medical record for insurance purposes relating to a single specific incident. As above, if you require us to post the information to you, you will be charged for the postage costs only. Payment may be required in advance.
Please note: for security reasons we will not put data onto a portable storage device, e.g. USB memory stick, writeable CD etc. provided by you. If you would like us to provide your information in this format we will charge for the cost of the device only. Payment may be required in advance.
